EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE / SYMPTOMS

INHALATION

Non toxic below 5000 ppm concentration
No symptoms from brief exposure to 5000 ppm
Slight dizziness from a few minutes exposure to 130,000 ppm
Massive exposure may cause :- Chronic neurological disorder

EYE CONTACT

Prolonged exposure can cause freezing of the eye. Permanent eye damage or blindness could result

SKIN CONTACT

No effects if contact is short timed
INGESTION Nausea and gastric distress

EMERGENCY TREATMENT

SKIN

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with water.
Remove to fresh air and restore breathing. Get medical attention.
EYES Immediately flush with water for 15 minutes while holding eyelids open.
INGESTION Nothing by mouth, if unconscious.

 PREVENTIVE MEASURES PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
INHALATION Wear suitable respirator if gas concentration is unknown
SKIN To protect from low temperature of the liquid wear: gloves, overalls, boots made from suitable material resistant to cold.
EYES Wear chemical-splash goggles or a face-shield to protect
from liquid contact

 HANDLING AND STORAGE PRECAUTIONS
 *   Follow rules for storing and handling of flammable and compressed gases
*   Store Pentane in Pentane-rated vessels/ cylinders upright in an area that is:-
(a) cool below 51°C),
(b) dry,
(c) well ventilated,
(d) separate
*   Keep the Pentane rated vessels away from:-
(a) combustible,
(b) oxidisers,
(c) sources of ignition
*   Use non-sparking:-
(a) ventilation system,
(b) electrical equipment
*   Outdoor storage is preferred
*   Ground all drums and transfer vessels including the Tank Truck

EMERGENCY AND FIRST - AID MEASURES
 FIRE
FIRE EXTINGUISHING Stop the source of liquid/gas if possible and cool off the container
MEDIA Extinguish small fire with :-
DCP; HALON; WATER SPRA; FOG; FOAM; CARBON DIOXIDE
SPECIAL PROCEDURES Fire - fighters should use SCBA & full protective equipment for fighting chemical fire use water spray to cool nearby containers exposed to fire
UNUSUAL HAZARDS   Fire / excessive heat may cause production of hazardous decomposition products. Explosive mixture (of air - vapour) can easily form.

 EXPOSURE

 FIRST - AID MEASURES
INHALATION Ensure your own safety before attempting rescue Use the "buddy" system. Remove source of Propane or move victim to fresh air
If heart has stopped, have trained personnel to immediately
begin artificial respiration. If breathing has stopped, have trained personnel to immediately begin cardio-pulmonary resusciation (CPR)
Trained personnel may administer oxygen if Physician advises
EYE CONTACT For liquid, gently blot or brush away excess chemical
immediately.
Flush affected eye with lukewarm, gently flowing water for 20
minutes holding the eyelid open
SKIN CONTACT For liquid, flush affected area with lukewarm running water
for at least 20minutes.
Under running water, carefully cut around clothing that sticks
to damaged skin and remove rest of garments
INGESTION No specific treatment
ANTIDOTES / DOSAGES Note: Obtain medical treatment immediately for all serious exposures.

 SPILLS

STEPS TO BE TAKEN   Shutdown transfer operation and stop leak. Eliminate sources of ignition.
Keep away upwind & warn people downwind of possible
explosion. Wear SCBA.
WASTE DISPOSAL   Only trained personnel should clean up. Ensure appropriate ventilation.
Use appropriate protective clothing and respirators. Remove all sources of heat and flame. Stop leak, if safe to do so. Isolate area and allow gas to disperse safely into atmosphere.
  Comply with environmental regulation.
